Microchannel reactors for fast periodic operation: the catalytic dehydration of isopropanol
نویسندگان
چکیده
A microchannel reactor specially designed for periodic operation and a process to deposit a catalyst, -alumina, inside the reactor channels were developed. The hydrodynamics of the reactor was characterised. Although the #ow in the microchannels is laminar, a uniform radial concentration pro"le and consequently a narrow residence time distribution were obtained. Depending on the manufacturing method the Bodenstein number was found to be Bo"ud/D 70. The catalytic coating had no in#uence on this distribution indicating a uniform deposition of the catalyst within the microchannels. As the inlet function was only slightly modi"ed in the reactors, frequencies of up to 1 Hz could be imposed for periodic operation. The dehydration of isopropanol to propene was chosen as model reaction to study the dynamic behaviour of a microreactor under periodic concentration variations. The kinetics was "rstly studied in a conventional "xed-bed reactor with the catalyst developed for the microreactor. Experimental results con"rmed the theoretically predicted increase of the reactor performance under periodic operation exceeding the maximum obtainable performance under steady-state conditions. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A variety of catalytic membranes of palladium-complexes with linear polymer ligands were prepared inside a microchannel reactor via coordinative and ionic molecular convolution to provide catalytic membrane-installed microdevices, which were applied to the instantaneous allylic arylation reaction of allylic esters and aryl boron reagents under microflow conditions to afford the corresponding co...
متن کاملComparison of the Performance of a Reverse Flow Reactor and Networks of Non-stationary Catalytic Reactors for Catalytic Combustion of Methane in Lean Mixtures
Although the operation under unsteady state is generally avoided and continuous operation is preferred in the chemical industry, this mode of operation can often lead to a better performance. Because of this, forced unsteady state reactors are object of increasing interest. In particular, the systems based on the periodic reversal of the feed flow direction, called reverse flow reactors (RFR), ...

Wall-to-bed (or wall-to-fluid) heat transfer issues in trickle bed reactors (TBR) has an important impact on operation and efficiency in this category of reactors. In this study, the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of trickle bed reactors was simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The multiphase behavior of trickle bed reactor was studied by the implementation of ...
متن کاملEffects of catalyst particle size on methanol dehydration at different temperatures and weight hourly space velocities
The effect of catalyst particle size on dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether is investigated using fixed bed and micro-channel reactors at different temperatures and weight hourly space velocities. The experiments were carried out at 290 and 320oC. The space velocities were changed from 10 up to 90h-1 and from 1.22 to 3.65h-1 for fixed bed and micro-channel reactors, respectively. Consider...
